he Cathedral of the Assumption reaches out to our commmunity, near and far. Listed below are just a few programs which touch our community's social and spiritual concerns.

Center for Interfaith Relations

The Center for Interfaith Relations mission is to develop spiritual, educational, and cultural experiences that inspire and foster individual growth, increase understanding among diverse cultures and advance ecumenical understanding.


Tri-Covenant Committee

The Covenant Committee welcomes members from Christ Church Cathedral and 4th Avenue United Methodist Church when they are guests at our Cathedral. The committee will meet with the Covenant Committee from Christ Church and 4th Avenue UMC to discuss and to determine the direction and activities of our covenant.


Crisis Intervention

Volunteers are needed for St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Duties include making home visits by a team of two volunteers to persons needing assistance in order to evaluate their needs and make recommendations to the Social Service Committee. St. Vincent de Paul Center/Society provides ongoing training.


Daily Lunch Program

On weekdays, a group prepares the sandwiches from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm and a second group serves the sandwiches from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm. On Saturdays one group prepares and serves the sandwiches from 11:30 am to1:00 pm. On Sundays, the group only serves the sandwiches from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm. Drivers are needed to pick-up and deliver donations on Monday through Friday. Volunteers to clean the dining room and kitchen are needed seven days a week.


The Healing Place

The Healing Place provides a full continuum of care to address the issues presented by their clients such as overnight homeless shelter, recovery programs for men and women, health care, meals, sobering-up center, clothes closet, and case management. Opportunities for stewardship include serving meals, office work, and after school care for the children who are living at the recovery center with their mothers. This would include tutoring, visiting, and possibly field trips.


Help Ministries

The Help Ministries was created by several churches in the downtown area, who decided to pool their resources and work together to minister to people of the inner city. The Cathedral is one of the participating churches. Volunteers are needed to work in the office to provide social service assistance. The Help Ministries office, located downtown at 421 South Second Street (at Christ Church Cathedral), is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.


Housing Initiative

This group coordinates volunteers for Repair Affair, Project Warm, Habitat for Humanity and similar projects.


Hunger and Poverty

This group is involved in the AIDS Walk, Hunger Walk, the Dessert Festival and special dinners for the homeless.


Legislative Network

This group will be involved with Catholic Charities and the Office of Peace and Justice to learn and develop action plans regarding issues of social justice. Volunteers to staff this committee are needed.


St. John's Center

St. John’s is a daytime shelter for homeless adults, which provides mental health and social services, medical and dental services, and an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program. Persons are needed to give generously to create a hopeful environment for those suffering the instability and disorientation of homelessness. Opportunities for stewardship include hands-on work such as serving coffee, monitoring the phone desk and checking clients into the shelter at the sign-in desk. The center is open from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm seven days a week, all year.


Sister Parish

The Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Louis parish in Jeremie, Haiti, formed a sister parish relationship in November of 2000. The goal of a sister parish relationship is the exchange of each other’s gifts, talents, and spirituality. The sister parish committee is responsible for maintaining awareness and for keeping the communication flowing between the Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Louis parish.
