he Cathedral of the Assumption, seat of American Catholicism’s first inland diocese, is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals in continuous use in the United States. Located in downtown Louisville, the Cathedral is a parish of approximately 1400 households with a strong musical tradition and a commitment to continued excellence in music and liturgy. The choirs of the Cathedral have performed several times with the Louisville Orchestra and have given many concerts while touring in Italy, Ireland, England, and France. In addition, the choirs have produced two compact disc recordings. This upcoming summer, the choirs will travel to Germany and Austria for their fourth international concert tour. The Cathedral Concert Series, now in its sixth year, continues to provide exceptional choral and organ performances for the enrichment of the Louisville community. The series has included performances by the Westminster Choir, Chattanooga Boys Choir, the Rose Ensemble, Mainz Cathedral Domchor, David Higgs, Stefan Engels, Pierre Pincemaille, Jacques van Oortmersen, Marek Kudlicki, and Todd Wilson.

The Cathedral Choir provides music for every 9:30 AM Sunday Liturgy from September through June. Except for four paid section leaders, this mixed choir of approximately forty-five voices is completely composed of volunteer amateurs. The Cathedral Choir also sings at a select number of weddings throughout the year. Their repertoire includes examples of the great choral literature from early chant through the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century Periods.

The Cathedral Schola is a new ensemble which provides music for every other Noon Sunday Liturgy from September through June. The composition of this ensemble varies from either men only or women only, to either a quartet or an octet. Their repertoire is mostly drawn from unison chant, early chant polyphony, or Renaissance and Baroque compositions suitable for a small ensemble.

The Cathedral Trebles are a group of younger children ranging in ages from seven to eleven who meet once a week in order to learn the basics of good choral musicianship. They sing periodically throughout the year in conjunction with the Cathedral Choir.
