s a worship community, the Cathedral belongs to all Catholics of the Archdiocese, but cathedrals have added responsibilities to the whole community. Cathedrals are spiritual centers calling all of us to a life of solidarity, compassion and human service. With Archbishop Thomas Kelly’s arrival in Louisville in 1982 and the assignment of Father J. Ronald Knott as pastor the following year, a new era of the Cathedral of the Assumption as an archdiocesan center began. The second golden age continues under the pastoral direction of Father William L. Fichteman, the current pastor.

Renovation of existing facilities, expansion of the Cathedral complex and revitalization of our mission to the broader community as a spiritual center in the heart of Louisville began in 1985 with establishment the Cathedral Heritage Foundation (now called Center for Interfaith Relations). Together, the Cathedral parish and the foundation move forward into the new millennium.
