Track 15 – Ambry, Candle, Statue

The Ambry is the large glass case in the rear of the church that holds the sacred oils used throughout the church year.  The Oil of the Sick is used to anoint those who are seriously ill and bring Christ’s healing to them.  The Oil of the Catechumens is for those who are preparing for Baptism.  The third oil is the Sacred Chrism, which is used to anoint the heads of those being baptized and for persons being confirmed.  It is also used to anoint the hands of priests when they are ordained.

The Paschal or Easter Candle is used each day of the Easter season and for baptisms and funerals throughout the year.  The new candle is lit during the Easter Vigil service and remains on the altar until the end of the Easter season when it is returned to the back of church by the baptismal font.

The wooden statue of the Virgin Mary is carved of linden or basswood and is original to the Cathedral.  The crown of stars she wears represents that she is the Queen of Heaven.  The serpent and apple under her feet represent Mary’s triumph over evil and sin.
